All charts have 12 divisions which we refer to as “houses”, and each represents a different area of your life.

The horizontal line across the centre of the wheel represents the horizon (if there’s a small circle in the very centre, ignore it). The Ascendant (sunrise) is at the left hand end (9 o’clock), and the Descendant (sunset) at the other end (3 o’clock).

The Ascendant is the cusp (beginning) of the 1st house.

Following around the wheel anti-clockwise, the next division is the 2nd house, then the 3rd, etc….until the 12th house, and you’ll be back at the Ascendant.

Some brief meanings of each house –

1. Who you are, how you look. “I”

2. What makes you secure, your income, your possessions. “MINE”

3. Your everyday environment, siblings, early learning, communication, short trips. “HERE”

4. Your home and everything domestic, family, real real estate. “MY PRIVATE LIFE”

5. Things that you enjoy – creativity, games, gambling, romance, children. “LOVE I GIVE”

6. Work, daily routines, health , domestic pets. “STATE Of BODY”

* These 6 houses are all below the horizon, and are personal.

* The next 6 are above the horizon, and are about your life in the outer world.

7. 1 to 1 relationships – personal, business or legal. “WE”

8. Support received from others – joint finances, inheritance, tax, loans. Sex, death (physical and spiritual), rebirth. “OURS”

9. Higher learning, astrology, philosophy, religion. Long distance travel, foreign affairs. “THERE”

10. Career, our public standing, authority. “MY PUBLIC LIFE”

11. Friends, groups. “LOVE I RECEIVE”

12. Behind the scenes, eg institutions, hospitals. Secrets, sorrow, dreams, meditation, inner consciousness. “STATE OF MIND”

These meanings are useful at the time of a New Moon or Full Moon. If you can find the house position, you’ll understand the area of your life which is likely to be in focus.
